 ...  after leaving france with boris in 1709, laurent remains a human in his company for fifteen years. after he is turned, he spends ninety more years under boris’ guidance and with his love, but the time eventually comes when laurent must experience the world on his own. in 1814, laurent ventures off on his own for the first time in over a hundred years. the nomadic lifestyle is quite the change, but he’s always adapted well, and this is no different.

laurent will grow to have a prominent, solid ground in the supernatural community and a set residence in the united states, though he often travels—for work and leisure. he is a well-known, self-titled supernatural historian and expert.

main 02: new moon, heavily canon divergent. takes place during the events of new moon. laurent has been with the denalis, learning to perfect the vegetarian diet and slowly growing attached to irina. when they realize their attraction is more than the fondness of company, laurent knows then that he will do anything to truly be a part of the family that the denalis have built. things go awry when an old friend come back to haunt him.

 ...  laurent is with the denalis, enveloped in their peaceful lifestyle and just beginning to discover a blinding new love, when an old friend seeks him out. victoria. in laurent’s quest for power (a thing of the past now that he’d found family in the denali’s and new love in irina), he had betrayed her alongside james—and now he's been reduced to ash, leaving her alone. she comes in friendship, seeking a favor from him so that she might avenge her lover by taking the life of the swan girl; the cullens' pet. the mate of the one who had allegedly killed james after his final game of cat and mouse.

“i did warn him,” laurent tells her, and she snarls at him like only a vampire can. “an eye for an eye,” she claims, and laurent knows he must indulge her in her wishes, even if he doesn't agree; even if he never intends to harm those so close to the family he has come to care for.

as a true friend to victoria, it was james that laurent had wanted to stop when he went to the cullens with information; he never meant for her to get caught in the crossfire. he had never meant for her to be hurt. she had reasoned with james, too, after all; she had implored him that their immortality wasn't worth the life of a meager human girl. but james hadn't listened—and while there had never been love lost between laurent and james, he feels as if he owes victoria this favor now.

so, on her behalf, he seeks out the olympic coven once more with the intent to gather information and leave in peace back to denali; back to his newfound home. laurent knows now why the cullens call themselves a family and he has no intention of disrupting what he has come to enjoy—what he has come to love.

he observes for a short time, intending to report back to victoria at the end of his stay. he learns quickly that the cullen home is empty and the swan girl is unprotected, but he does nothing more than watch. his hands will not be tainted with bella swan's blood. he swears it to himself—for the love irina has showed him. should he not prove himself worthy of it, even if he doesn't understand why a human is so important to the cullen coven?

while he’s in forks, laurent does indulge himself a little by cheating on the diet. the thirst for human blood is harder to leave behind than he had imagined, and what harm could come from such a short lapse, such a little indulgence? he'll be sure to go back to denali with golden eyes and renewed sense of commitment to what they call vegetarianism.

but it seems god has other plans. punishment, perhaps, for laurent's indiscretion against his newfound coven.

he's hunting a human in the woods, a camper, when he comes across victoria's prize in a twisted turn of events. isabella swan, all alone, and her scent is absolutely mouthwatering. even if he tried, laurent wouldn't have been able to ignore the agonizing burning in his throat that would only subside with the taste of her blood on his tongue. he knows it will anger victoria, perhaps even endanger his future in the denali's home, but it's far too late for any of that now. the bloodlust has already consumed him. it breaks his heart to think of irina's disappointment, perhaps even her anger, but he's far too into the hunt to be able to stop. lost to his instincts, laurent promises bella, "i'll kill you quickly, as a favor." after all, victoria's plans for her were far more painful; surely he is the lesser of two great evils. if death for her was inevitable, would she not prefer it quick and painless over slow and agonizing?

the moment he goes in for the kill, however, he's interrupted by creatures he hadn't seen in decades. werewolves, they look like, but they're different than any he's studied thus far. they aren't bound to the moon like the one he had hunted with james and victoria, and they were stronger than the werewolves laurent had become familiar with. quicker. fast enough to catch up with him easily.

soon, laurent finds that death does not creep as it did when he was human. it pounces and tears at his flesh with canine teeth and sharpened claws——but it seems death has no use for him anymore.

laurent leaves forks with horrible scars marring his body, but his life intact. his best guess is that victoria thinks he’s dead——and he does well to cover his tracks, just in case she tries to involve him in her plan for bella’s demise again.

• verse › main 03 / eclipse

main 03: eclipse, heavily canon divergent. takes place during the events of eclipse. canon divergent. laurent is horribly scarred, but alive after the wolves' attack and returns to denali, alaska as a permanent, devoted part of their coven and family.

 ...  laurent has survived the wolves' attack, but leaves forks with horrible scars that will forever marr his body. the denalis are as forgiving as ever after his near-fatal interaction with bella in the woods, even if he is undeserving, and laurent is entirely devoted to their family from then on. with a heavy resentment for the wolves who had left his body scarred beyond repair, laurent and irina politely decline the cullens' request for help with the newborn army and subsequently begin a life of peace; how long will it last this time?

main 05: breaking dawn, heavily canon divergent. takes place during the events of breaking dawn.

 ...  with laurent alive, the reasoning for irina's decisions change. news of bella's transformation and renesmee's birth had not yet reached the denalis, so irina travels to forks with intent to apologize for and explain her coven not being there for the fight with victoria’s newborns. without any grudge held against the cullens, irina sees renesmee and, truly thinking that she is an immortal child, acts out of a grudging respect for the volturi's law. with her and her sisters' past, seeing their mother die at the volturi's hands for creating an immortal child, it is because of this that she goes to the volturi.

laurent is present at the time of the breaking dawn volturi confrontation and is there when caius kills irina for false information.

• verse › main 01 / twilight

main 01: twilight, heavily canon divergent. takes place leading up to and during the events of twilight.   centuries after leaving his creator and spending time as a nomad, laurent is with james and victoria when they meet the cullens in the clearing and, after betraying his former coven leader to aid the cullens in their fight to protect bella swan, eventually joins the denali coven, where he will later prosper.

 ...  laurent parts ways amicably with boris, seeking a new thrill with the coming of his 120th birthday. the power he shares with boris is no longer enough to satisfy him, the human concept of death still sticking with him even well after becoming an immortal.

↳  [a/n, headcanon]: laurent’s effort in becoming powerful has less to do with ego and more to do with a lingering human fear of death. when he was young, barely seven years old, he watched his grandmother die from a lengthy illness that first made her terribly sick before it took her life.

he travels as a nomad for years, only joining other vampires on occasion and never for too long. the romanian coven, or what remained of it then, is one of the more prominent covens laurent accompanies over the years; stefan and vladimir held an extraordinary history and remnants of a great power laurent had not sensed since boris—since he was human. out of respect for their need for isolation, laurent doesn’t stay with them longer than a decade, but it is long enough to be deemed untrustworthy by the volturi when, years later, he goes to them in hopes to become a member of their guard.

boris had made sure to educate him properly on the existence of them, the ruling coven residing in italy, and instilled a healthy respect for the law in his progeny. his view of the coven as systematic law enforcers doesn’t begin to change until he hears rumors of the massacres—entire covens reduced to ash in simple, often one-sided fights. they don’t happen often, but enough to plant seeds of doubt in laurent’s mind when he learns that gifted or otherwise useful vampires were spared and added to the volturi’s ranks. still, he continues to visit volterra every few years to offer up any information they might deem valuable. he never goes out of his way to look out for their personal well-being, but remains useful to them when he comes across broken laws only implemented for the safety and security of vampirism as a whole; laws he believes in and abides by. he is very much righteous in his obeying of vampire law, especially in his nomad years.

the next notable vampires laurent will join are james and victoria, a couple that welcome his wily skill and charming disposition. laurent quickly learns that they use him to gain advantage, to play leader for the sake of their safety, but he’s too intrigued by the aura of invincibility that james exudes and victoria’s supernatural ability to sense danger long before it arrives.

laurent views it as a learning experience. he likes the spontaneity of their lifestyle, and james’ games can be quite fun.... but just like everything else, he tires of it after a while. he tires of playing the game of leader so that he is danger’s first target; tires of laying his life on the line for them. for james, who often disregards laurent’s life in favor of his games—his hunts.

he eventually betrays them when—as expected—one of james’ cat and mouse games becomes too dangerous. despite the friendship he’s formed with victoria, james’ is just a product of convenience and he doesn’t listen to reason when laurent tells him that the odds aren’t in their favor this time around; the tracker is too arrogant to see that his new human target has an army behind her.

seven bizarre vampires who call themselves a family. the cullens. another learning experience.

they also called themselves vegetarians; vampires who feed solely on animal blood, turning their eyes a golden amber color that looks like liquid gold. laurent, who had never heard of such a thing, is highly intrigued. is that what gives them the ability to form deeper bonds; gives them a stronger sense of power in numbers?

and while laurent has no desire to forgo human blood, he craves the knowledge above all else. it makes the decision to betray james that much easier. in doing so, laurent will only look out for himself——as it should be, after so long spent as a target for the danger that james brought.

the moment the line has been crossed, the moment war begins and snarls are spit out in defense, laurent leaves james and victoria to seek out the olympic coven. he doesn’t desire to be the first focus for them, yet again, like so many others had made him. so he tells them james’ plan—and the bittersweet betrayal comes with a new thrill. a new experience.
laurent’s history doesn’t offer him any guarantees, and seeing as he posed too much of a danger to join the cullens, carlisle offers an alternative; the denalis, who the cullens refer to as cousins. they are vegetarians like them, with a coven quite large.

carlisle gives laurent information, answers many of his burning questions, and with it, gives him a chance to join the coven in alaska.

↳  [a/n, headcanon]: picture: laurent, standing at a bookshelf in carlisle’s study, holding a picture of the denali sisters in hand. it fills him with a sense of hope that he hadn’t been anticipating; after all, joining their coven and adopting their strange diet had only started with laurent’s love for expanding his knowledge base, but something had changed since he’d spoken about them with carlisle. he leaves for alaska in a day’s time and while there are no guarantees that he’ll be met with anything other than disdain and suspicion, something inside of him can envision it—a permanent home, a kind of family he’s never had—and laurent, for the first time in a long while, finds himself anxious for the future.

like the olympic coven, they are strong because of their numbers, and laurent overlooks their strange diet even in the face of unbearable thirst. he adapts (though he sometimes cheats) because to be with them means to be powerful in a new, radical way, and through them he meets a woman—irina—who might give him the chance to bond in a way that has become unfamiliar to the monster he’s become.

↳  [a/n, headcanon]: it proves to be a rocky start in denali, especially with tanya and eleazar, but laurent understands their hesitation. he is intruding into their lives, their peace, and surely carlisle couldn't have offered any guarantees to laurent's seemingly good intentions——but he would do his best to prove himself if they let him.

he smiles the night irina apologizes for her sisters’ overprotectiveness, only a week into laurent’s first visit. "i understand their worry," he says, and when he looks at her, he sees no possibilities now—only certainty. it fills him with a renewed sense of determination. "i intend to change their minds, though, so you shouldn't trouble yourself with it any longer.”

aro is the authority behind the order to let trusted vampires leak information to a band of hunters that had been tracking louis’ family. aro is the linchpin in the hunters’ plan; without the intimate information he’d gathered, the hunters would have never been able to break louis the way they do.

default: arc 01, canon compliant. diego marsten is alpha to the redwater pack and santiago is their pack fixer. threats to the pack are steadily decreasing with santiago's hard work and pack numbers are growing. in this arc, numbers are close to seven hundred. most of santiago's time is spent forging documents and doing human jobs since the pack is currently stable.

 ...  santiago and diego have never been on good terms solely because diego disagreed with his son's choice to take him in. they are civil enough to act justly with one another when the need calls for it, but santiago doesn't deal with diego if he can help it. he remains loyal out of love for his family and his pack, but santiago generally tends to do things himself. he's a quick thinker—he takes care of problems as they arise and, if he needs permission from his alpha for whatever reason, sofia or antonio go in his stead. otherwise, their meetings are as quick and to-the-point as possible.

santiago and his father both hold the pack fixer title, but more often than not it is santiago who does the job. if nothing else, it gets him away from diego's judging gaze for a time. it helps to hone his skill, too, and his abilities quickly surpass his father's. antonio is proud to pass his job onto his son when the time comes, and from then on santiago is the sole keeper of their secret. he does such an excellent job that there is less than twenty deaths a year at the hands of hunters and the number steadily goes down every year.

in 2010, the pack's numbers are nearing close to seven hundred. the pack is thriving despite the hunters that seek them out. redwater valley serves as a fortress; isolated so much that an outsider hasn't stepped foot on the grounds in over a decade. every now and again there's a group of overzealous teens that seek out the manor based on foolish rumors that it might be haunted or taken over by vicious beasts, but they always leave scared out of their minds after a visit with santiago. they go back to their friends with boring stories of how the place really is abandoned. they saw nothing but spiders and cobwebs and it was all very uneventful. no one comes by again for years and they are, again, safe and protected.

the place is their safe-haven, passed down to each alpha by tradition and with the appropriate legal documents. the valley holds historical status in the town because of its long life.

in the eyes of humans who know otherwise, the pack is nothing but a large, kind family desiring peace in their isolation. scandals never include redwater valley, and it is never mentioned in any local newspapers or prints. law enforcement, who are all on friendly terms with alpha diego marsten, keep talk of their residence low.

santiago works as both a pack fixer and a forger, bodyguard jobs few and far between, and with expert skill, keeps his pack life separate from his human life.

default: arc 01, canon compliant. in 2011, pack numbers start dwindling. deals with hunters are made behind the pack’s back, at their expense. santiago challenges diego as alpha and gains alpha status. most of santiago's time is spent in redwater valley, with his pack at the forefront of his mind. he occasionally does a forger job here and there, but most of his efforts are to the pack’s benefit. the pack is just recovering from large scale deaths. they are closer to three hundred in number as of 2016, but steadily growing as the years pass.

 ...  at the beginning of 2011, pack members start dying. it starts first with one of santiago's best friends; lucas, one of the best fighters of the pack and someone who supported santiago from the moment they met. every week it seemed like there were more victims. hunters were suddenly taking them down at a rate they hadn’t been able to manage for over a century.

wolves were dying, and for five years it continues like this. wolf after wolf, and both santiago and antonio were at a loss. they held down redwater valley, kept the place safe, did everything they could to keep information from falling into the wrong hands, and yet the death rate steadily rose.

the redwater alpha, diego, had begun selling out members of his pack to hunters for a payout. safety from their groups, as well—but only for himself. their numbers slowly dwindle. for years the numbers go down and down and while that happens, tensions grow between diego and antonio. five years in, antonio eventually discovers the deals that diego has been making behind the pack's back. after trying to stop them the best he can, there is a confrontation between him and his father, and diego’s first response to the threat is to do away with it.

in july of 2015, diego murders his son to keep the deals going; to keep his pack from finding out, knowing they would oust him and strip him of his status and power. he covers it up by staging antonio’s suicide on the grounds that he had been watching people he loved die all around him.

santiago, knowing that his father wouldn’t resort to suicide and seeing the odd circumstances surrounding his sudden death, starts to dig into the incident. a year and some weeks later, he discovers the truth: diego had killed his son. his grandfather had murdered his father to keep the dirty deals a secret.

santiago confronts diego the moment he sets foot in redwater valley. he makes sure he does it publically, causing a scene automatically and attracting the rest of the pack. they listen as santiago shouts his accusations, and it all seems to make sense when santiago screams out the facts in perfect order, with perfect reason. they watch as santiago starts a physical fight, intending to kill diego even without concrete evidence. of course, being the alpha, diego’s men come to his rescue before any real harm can be done. regardless of any supposed crimes, they have a duty to protect their alpha.

realizing that he can’t simply take diego down like this, he thinks on his feat: he challenges diego for the position of alpha. it’s not a very common occurrence among any wolf pack, let alone those of redwater. they had lived several generations since the last challenge, but the rules were still to be upheld. if a wolf challenges their alpha, it must be accepted, and they must fight to the death before the night ends. the surviving wolf-fighter, after proving his strength and his worth, will assume the title of alpha and the preceding alpha’s body will be burned.

diego and santiago’s challenge lasts for hours. every minute is grueling, but they are both experienced fighters; neither of them will be easy to take down.

in the end, however, santiago wins. in the final moment, he gains control and snaps diego’s neck. he’s a sweating, bleeding mess by that point, certainly needing medical attention and a long night’s rest, but he stays kneeling at diego’s side. he snaps at anyone who tries to remove him or tries to take diego’s body away.

he sits there for hours, watching, staring, until the grief hits him and he breaks. he hunches over and screams into the dirt. he mourns for his father, curses his grandfather, and cries for the memory of the only family he had ever known.

the sun is just rising when his aunt sofia finally comes to him. he has long since cried himself to exhaustion, eyes burning with the remnants of violently-shed tears, but he makes no move to get up from where he kneels.

it takes him a minute to look at her, and he can see the redness in her eyes right away. while he’s been mourning his father, she’s been mourning hers. it breaks his heart right there; apologies are on his tongue so quickly, so smoothly, but sofia shushes him with a tear-stained smile. “it had to be done,” she says, and then she runs her palms over her face and turns to him with a steady determination, “let’s get you clean, alpha. up. quickly.”

sofia spends the night softly snapping orders at a broken santiago. for the remaining day, she becomes the alpha that he can’t be and by the next morning, he is the alpha the redwater pack needs.

now, with his aunt behind him, he starts to clean up the mess that diego has left.

because of this, daniel has always had a large family.   blood or not, he's never without attention, never without someone to play with or entertain him.   if he doesn't have someone from the family to watch over him, he has his mother's most trustworthy clients, or his older sister sofia to love and annoy.   as a child, he spends his time watching races, learning how to build cars from scratch, and practicing shooting guns.

right from the start, daniel grows up amidst crime, weapons, shady dealings, and reckless driving.   despite the bad influences, daniel grows up to be a very smart child, albeit one very spoiled and very loved; always held, always coddled, he gets away with almost anything.   it seems there is no one in the world who won't dote on the kid.

and as amazing and influential as they are, it isn't any of them that daniel looks up to the most.   it's lorenzo decarlo, the head of the crime family that he favors the most.   known simply as boss to most and the undertaker to his enemies, daniel calls him grandpapa and adores him almost as much as he adores daniel.   there is no wish, no desire, nothing the boss would deny his only grandson.   he is his world, and daniel learns a lot from him growing up.

1991 - 1992. age seven (7) to age eight (8).

it's lorenzo's idea to take the immediate family over to sicily for the summer, to meet old friends and family members he had left behind when he had moved to new orleans years ago.   daniel is outside with sofia and their grandmama, roaming the wide yard outside of the old house.   they've made a game of catching fireflies in the early dusk while their father and grandfather were out on business.

his mother has stayed inside with cousins, aunts, and uncles.   people daniel and sofia had never even heard of before stepping onto italian soil.   they were fun. kind.   everyone got along well enough, although daniel had called one of his newfound cousins a party-pooper because he wouldn't join the siblings on their firefly hunt.

more for them, then, right?

with their small hands and stumbling forms, it takes them quite a while to catch one.   when daniel finally does, he's so proud.   he leaves sofia and their grandmama to run to the house, an old marmalade glass in his hand, tiny insect fluttering about inside.   excited, he had wanted to show his mama the pretty, glowing bug he had caught all on his own—without his sister's help!   but mama isn't there to greet him with open arms like usual or share in his sudden excitement.

it's the shattering of glass that brings daniel's grandmama into the house, alarmed and alert when daniel's little hands drop the jar, horror in his eyes.   the firefly flies off, and all that's left for daniel's grandmama is death. when she sees what's been done to her daughter, her family, her heart shatters just as the jar did.   the sight of charlotte lying still on the ground and covered in a pool of bright crimson is too much for her.

she has a heart attack.

the family had been in the process of setting the table when it happened, the smell of sweet lasagna and bruschetta still noticeable in the air, but it's now thick with the stench of salt and copper and the faint scent of sulfur bullets leave after they've been shot.   it hangs like a heavy, suffocating blanket over them, sofia finally coming in from outside to see daniel standing over their mother's body.   his eyes can't seem to leave the splattered blood covering the wall, and daniel thinks something is off.

something isn't right, and it isn't the dead bodies of family members he had just met littering the floor.

the little boy of only seven can't quite comprehend the feeling, but daniel only knows he can't understand why someone would leave the blood of the woman that raised him, loved him, in an ugly mess against the walls.

he has to fix it.   he doesn't quite know how or why, but he has to.  daniel climbs on a nearby chair, his small frame not quite tall enough to reach so high.   he ignores the sound of his sister crying in the background, frantically trying to help their fallen grandmama.   he starts to smear his fingers again and again through the thick, wet red, creating pattern after pattern; anything better than the splattering of blood that had been there previously.   he's in some far away state, zombified as he tries his hardest to please his mother with the outcome of his picture.

that splattering of blood can't be all that's left of his precious mama.   he hisses and claws at anyone who tries to pry him away from his work, desperately yelling and screaming for them to get away.   he isn't done.

lorenzo, who had returned to find his wife suffering and most of his family dead, is the one to finally reach through to daniel.   while antonio tends to sofia and their grandmama, lorenzo puts his full attention on daniel.   he comments on the drawing, telling daniel how much his mother would have loved it.   "i'm proud of you, boy," he says, "for making something so horrible into something beautiful. that's what you wanted to do for your mama, isn't it?"

after a bit of pressing, he manages to get daniel, blood-covered and tearful, to turn towards him and run to wrap his tiny arms around his grandpapa's legs.   he cries in lorenzo's arms and then his father's for the rest of the night, and finally crawls into his sister's bed and sobs himself to sleep.

lorenzo knows, of course, that the hitmen had been after him when they came.   when they couldn't find him or his son amongst the crowd, they'd settled for killing his daughter-in-law and everyone else in the house.   it's simple luck that his wife and grandchildren had survived, and lorenzo knows that he is responsible for the misery that had transpired that day.

following their deaths, daniel's grandfather completely devotes his life to the hunt for the hitmen and the ones who sent them, and to keep a sense of normalcy after the tragic incident, he fully intends for daniel and sofia to spend their days in new orleans, surrounded by those they knew, loved, and trusted.

antonio has other plans.

much to lorenzo's dismay, antonio takes daniel and sofia and leaves new orleans, intending to establish a new life away from the dirty business dealings that had gotten their family killed.   just the three of them, they move to a great pacific island, but soon antonio realizes these plans would be short-lived...

1992 - 1998. age eight (8) to age fourteen (14).

both children, as they grew, became too much to handle.   they were too stuck in the past, it seemed, with both of them becoming short-tempered and angry for different reasons.   sofia takes on an obsession with the ones who killed their loved ones and she doesn't intend to rest until she sees to it they are dead—not by lorenzo's hands, or by anyone else's, but by her own.   about a year after they move to the island, sofia demands to go back to new orleans and pursue her grandpapa's criminal endeavors—for her mother.

daniel takes focus on his mother's business, in her legacy. she'd put her blood, sweat, and tears into her shop and the track, and his father was letting it all rot for some pretty ocean view and a sense of misplaced duty to his family.   "this isn't what mama would have wanted," daniel argues with antonio, but his father snaps back that she'd want him to have a happy, long life; something he felt daniel couldn't have in new orleans.   they fight about it for a long time, and daniel doesn't have anyone to take his anger out on, so he begins to settle for anyone who crosses his path.

he gets into fights, uses his fists instead of his words, and comes home nearly every day with freshly bloodied knuckles.   he starts to act out in other ways, too; ways that he knows would make his mama smile, but it does nothing but anger antonio.   he wanted daniel to have nothing to do with anything criminal, but to honor his mama, daniel spent a lot of time messing with cars, building them and tweaking them for races only the underground type seemed to know about, and no matter what antonio did he couldn't keep daniel away from it.

at the beginning of high school, it starts to become a little too much, and antonio can't seem to ignore it any longer.   he can't make excuses anymore; not for the fights or the tickets or the police rides home.   daniel breaking his classmate's nose when he'd teased him about his dead mama had been one thing, but getting suspended from the third school he'd been in during the past few months for threatening a kid with a switchblade was another.

so he sends daniel back to new orleans...

1998 - present. age fourteen (14) to present.

his grandpapa happily welcomes him back, of course, and sees to it that daniel returns back to his mother's shop while being fully introduced to the underground in which lorenzo controls.   there, daniel learns fighting skills, weaponry, hand-to-hand combat; everything he could possibly need to protect himself without pushing him into the world of crime further.   a kind of compromise that had been made with antonio.

sofia grows up to become someone lorenzo's men call "little undertaker," and daniel becomes quite the businessman. he dives into cars, into racing, and he spends his time furthering his mother's legacy.

he follows in his mother's footsteps, taking over her shop and expanding it bit by bit.   the track stays ever-busy, of course, and daniel sees a lot of lorenzo and sofia's criminal associates there.   by his twenty-fifth birthday, daniel owns not one, but five auto shops all over the united states, creating his mother's shop into a franchise, with a number he is consistently working to grow—to honor his mother.
